Edgerton Before & After School Care Society (EBASC)
The Village of Edgerton and area residents will soon have access to a new out of school child care program commencing in September 2010. The Edgerton Before & After School Care Society (EBASC) has been awarded a capital grant through the Government of Alberta: Children... and Youth Services Making Space for Children: Child Care Space Creation Innovation Fund. The EBASC Board has been working for the last 18 months through the planning and funding application phases, and finally received notification of approval for the program in January 2010. The $30,000 grant will be used for start-up of the new program in Edgerton that will provide spaces for 20 children total in Grades K-6. The program will be running from a room at the Edgerton Public School, with access to the playground and other school facilities outlined in a yearly lease agreement with Buffalo Trail Regional Division. Now that a capital grant has been awarded, the EBASC Board is hard at work getting the program into place. The next steps are to hire program staff, including a Child Development Supervisor (formerly Level 3) as the Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the day to day operation of the program, including staff supervision and program development. Other staff will include a Child Development Worker, and a Casual Child Development Assistant. The EBASC Board is also working on some fundraising initiatives and community events in the next few months. The grant awarded by the Government will fund the capital costs of the program, but the operating expenses that start even prior to program commencement need to be covered with other funding sources. Board Treasurer, Jennifer Wildeboer explains, “Staff salaries, advertising and other administration costs for the program are not covered by the capital grant. We need to be able to raise additional funds to cover these costs.” The EBASC Board is looking for volunteers to assist with the program and/or fundraising initiatives. Now that a firm start date has been set and the capital grant has been awarded, the EBASC Board is hopeful that area residents will be willing to offer more support. Anyone interested in helping out is encouraged to contact any of the current board members for more information. DANGEROUS SITUATION
A recent problem has begun where young persons are going out to the disposal site breaking fluorescent tubes, tv screens and computer equipment. These objects have toxic material which is released when broken, that is why it is to be collected and disposed of safely. They are also making a mess by spreading garbage all over. This could result in the site being refenced at a large expense. The village is asking the cooperation of parents to educate their children about the dangers of solid waste material and instruct them to stay away from the site. Any one who observes kids at the solid waste site, please contact the Village office at 780-755-3933. During non business hours, please leave a phone message. Bicycle tracks were seen at the solid waste site indicating it was youth creating the damage.
